A Message to Alumni and Friends of Union City Education
The Union City Education Foundation was created by caring alumni who grasped, if slowly, the increasing pressure that small town school systems face. We pushed our role as far as an Alumni Association can logically push. Now we have formed the Union City Education Foundation to provide infrastructure for higher level support -- larger donations and interactive dialog with caring donors regarding the school's present and future needs.
Some give as payback for benefits received as students. Some pay-it-forward because they believe in making the future a better place. All believe in the value and power of education and share collective pride in the excellence that our small-town education system has maintained over the years. Returning alumni who experienced Union City's golden era are shocked and saddened by the still evident impact of the plant closing era of the 1980s and '90s: buildings shuttered, homes long-empty. But when they drive to the school complex on North Plum, there's a feeling that a miracle has happened on the prairie.
The facility is first-class. The staff and teachers are not only capable, they have maintained the can-do culture that caused alumni of yesteryear to march into the real world confident that we were fully prepared to compete on any stage we chose. And we've done it.
In Century 21, there is even more of a a Hoosiers feel to the battle being waged. School budgets are under increasing pressure, cost of maintaining curriculum excellence is escalating, the job market is increasingly competitive and our commitment stands firm that Union City students will be fully competitive with graduates of larger schools having multiple resource advantages.
So the Union City Education Foundation is based on the belief that Alumni and other friends of UC education will step forward to help meet the needs of 21st Century small-town education.
There is a participation bonus: The school system is the shining star in Union City's economic development campaign -- efforts to attract relocation of families and businesses. We directly assist that effort through our support of continuing education excellence.
